Music Friday Kicks it all off for students in May!
Our Music Friday celebration occurred on Friday third. The whole school performed Oscar Petterson's "Hymn to Freedom". We had quite an assemblage: ukuleles, recorders, piano, hi-hat, violin singing and actions! We were also winners of $250 from the Coalition of Music Education in Canada (Music Monday Founders) and put it towards having First Nation singer Chantal Chagnon (her website is here) lead the school in some singing at our assembly and later teach some First Nations songs and allow students to try some of her hand-made drums. Grade 3's Recently performed Hymn to Freedom at the Volunteer tea on their recorders! Grade 3's will be continuing to develop their ability to read notation in the treble clef, and practice fingering and songs using the notes C'BAG. Recorder Hero videos (available on youtube here) have been very useful in our learning. Grade 4's Grade 4's are working with their recorders and reviewing treble clef notation. This includes fingering, rhythm and learning to read treble clef music. Recorder Hero videos (available on youtube here) have been very useful in our learning. Grade 5's Grade 5's have begun work on their Farewell Song. Each class has selected their own song to transform with lyrics into something reflecting their experience at Varsity and future aspirations. We are also looking at ways to re-create the music of the song on the instruments in the music room. They are looking forward to sharing our creations at the June Farewell assembly. Grade 6's Grade 6's have begun work on their Farwell Presentation. Some classes are creating a musical based off a student's story while others have picked a song and are changing the lyrics to reflect their message for their Varsity Farewell. Both are also looking to integrate instruments in the music to re-create songs found in the songs chosen. They are looking forward to sharing our creations at the June Farewell assembly. Hello all,
Welcome to 2019! January is our month of Music Share! Students in my classes do not need to send in a form, they sign up in class. These classes include students in Grade 4-6 and Mme. Pelleau's Grade 3 students. For Music Share I am encouraging students to come in with more than simply the song title and artist/composer name. I am asking them to find out what music genre their share falls into a long with another interesting fact about the song/composer. Students will have until January 14th to sign-up for Music Share in the classroom. For those interested, my Music Share videos is Sounds from Space Courtesy of NASA. I found it interesting to discover that sound does exist in space in the form of electromagnetic waves. Normally sound vibrations pass via molecules, but this is an issue in the empty vacuum of space. NASA used some special instruments to pick up the electromagnetic "sound" waves and transformed them into sounds our ears could hear.
